Career stories

Craig Jennings

UK Business Manager

Tell us about how you secured a job with 80:20.

In 2015, I was looking to make a change and identified 80:20 as a procurement company I wanted to work for. I went ahead and sent a cold email to the Managing Director Paul Dorward asking for an interview. It took a bit of persistence and determination however after keeping in touch for several months, Paul agreed to a meetingI went on to join 80:20 as a Senior Buyer and have since progressed to Key Account Manager and more recently to UK Business Manager.

What does your role involve?

I look after our UK operations and support clients with their global procurement needs to ensure we help achieve their business objectives, deliver a valuable service and all work is carried out safely.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

As a procurement professional, there is no better feeling than closing a sale. From the initial enquiry to negotiating and finally receiving that purchase order, it’s very satisfying completing a transaction for your client.

Career stories

Robin Higginbotham

Key Account Manager

When did you join 80:20 and what was your first job?

I joined 80:20 in February 2017. I was initially hired as a part-time contractor to source items for the Shell Canada Unconventional Contract, which we ultimately won. In April 2017, I was hired as a Senior Buyer and worked on the Shell Canada, Helix and Tesla accounts for my first two years. The Senior Buyer position involved sourcing the tail-end spend for our customers while providing customer service and helping to grow the account.  At this time, we were a small team, so I was involved in all aspects of the procurement process including sourcing the product, developing vendor relationships, creating sales orders and purchase orders, shipping and receiving, and logistics.

Why did you decide to work in the procurement industry?

After graduating from college, I went to work for a small manufacturing company that provided exposure to all sides of the business. I found the supply chain to be the most versatile and enjoyed working in a fast-paced environment where I had the opportunity to negotiate low prices. Finding ways to save money is always a challenge but offers such a reward when successful. Over the years so much of how we do business with vendors has changed and it is interesting to source suppliers that are willing to work with you towards common goals.

How has your career with 80:20 progressed to date?

When I began working for 80:20, I was accountable for sourcing materials and ensuring that supplies were delivered to the customer at a low cost and in a timely fashion. After two years, I was promoted to Key Account Manager and my responsibilities now include overseeing customer accounts, working on innovative solutions for our customers, strategizing on how to get the most out of our supply chain, and selling our services to new and current clients.  My job gives me the chance to work with our internal teams and customer buying groups around the world providing exposure to different cultural requirements.

What is your career highlight so far?

80:20 began operating in the Americas in June 2016 and year after year we have continued to grow.  Developing relationships and building trust with our clients has been my goal and seeing those customers return the trust by continually placing orders has been a highlight.

What’s the most enjoyable aspect of working for 80:20?

There is so much about my job that I love. I mostly enjoy the diversity of my position; there is never a day that is the same. Currently, we are working on initiatives to push partnerships both on the client and vendor side. We are looking at different ways that we can increase efficiency and save money by utilizing technology, automation and reporting.  Every company we work with is different and I enjoy the challenge of finding unique ways to support our customers and develop our supply chain through creative collaboration.

Natasha Buxo

Global Business Support Manager

When did you join 80:20 and what was your first job?

I joined Peterson in 2015 as a Peterson Academy Management Trainee and was introduced to 80:20 as part of one of my projects during the traineeship.

When the traineeship was completed, 80:20 offered me a full-time position and my first job was to help 80:20 set up and develop business in the Americas region.

Why did you decide to work in the procurement industry?

I have a master’s degree in psychology with a concentration
in industrial organisational psychology, so I really did not have any background or history with procurement when I started with the company.

I initially decided to work with 80:20 because of the people
and the friendly culture within the group. I was also interested in organisational development and in helping the business improve its processes and efficiency. I have learned a lot about procurement along the way, as I have been involved in all aspects of the business from the ground up.

How has your career with 80:20 progressed to date?

My career with 80:20 has been exciting, challenging, and ever-evolving. I have gone from being a Management Trainee; to being involved in setting up new entities outside of the UK; to becoming Global Support Manager for the group; and most recently taking on Key Account Management responsibilities, managing a UK-based buying team and overseeing multiple
client accounts.

What is your career highlight so far?

There have been many highlights on my 80:20 journey so far,
but one that stands out on a personal level is that Peterson and 80:20 agreed to sponsor me with a UK work visa to live and work in the UK permanently. I moved from Trinidad to Aberdeen at the end of 2017, so it is fair to say that my life has been completely changed.

What’s the most enjoyable aspect of working for 80:20?

My initial reason for joining 80:20 still stands – we have a great team and I enjoy working with everyone.
